CJ's best day yet...50 lb cobia with sharks lurking

Here's one for the books. CJ freediving in 50 sees 3 big eagle rays and this 50 lb cobia shadowing them. He shoots the cobia, gets too far from the boat so his cousin, Scott has to go get the boat. A 5 ft. bull shark shows along with a couple of blacktips. He has Scott's loaded gun in one hand and the other gun attached to a lively upset cobia in the other. Scott comes with the boat and CJ has to freedive back down to put another spear in this fish to stop it. -long story short. They got the fish and CJ said it was his best day yet!  Congrats CJ

Fishing Report February 2, 2013

Hook and Line: Kiefer Woods

On Saturday February 2, I went out fishing with Captain Dane Karcher. With the temperature to reach a high of 71 degrees and winds out of the east around 5 knots, we headed out of John’s Pass. The water temperature was about 66 degrees on the surface.
We fished a couple different spots along the same ledge in 35 to 40 feet of water. The temperature quickly warmed up to 70 degrees as the winds and waves calmed. Unfortunately, due to the cold front that had come through a few days before, the water was not very clear. We could only see a few feet below the surface.
We brought light tackle and live shrimp in the hopes of catching some elusive hogfish. We caught plenty of gray snapper along with a few porgies and one keeper sea bass. Unfortunately, we never hooked a hogfish, but we did drop some squid heads down on medium spinner rods and caught five or six red grouper and three gag groupers. With the grouper being out of season, though, we had to throw them back in.
Overall, it was a fun day out on the water and we returned to the dock with plenty of gray snapper and porgies to filet up for some fish tacos.
